University of California, Berkeley
Network Advisory Committee (NAC)

Charter for the e-Berkeley/ITAC Network Advisory Committee
last revised June 13, 2002

The charge of this subcommittee is to provide input and assistance to the campus community on network-related issues and to assist the Chancellor's Cabinet in aligning network projects with campus program priorities by working with Information Systems & Technology - Communication & Network Services (IST-CNS). Priority setting on behalf of the Cabinet will focus on projects such as the Riser Project and issues related to the Node Bank.

The goal is to ensure that networking priorities are set in support of the overall campus program priorities and to facilitate the flow of information from CNS to the campus. The Network Advisory Committee reports to the Information Technology Architecture Committee (ITAC) and through the ITAC to the e-Berkeley Steering Committee.

Specifically, the committee will provide input and assistance to CNS in the following areas:
  • Perform research and recommend priorities for the Riser Project.
  • Provide guidance on resolution of Node Bank issues. For example, recommend policies for dealing with situations such as handling node bank issues during seismic surges.
  • Policy review and definition, including policies related to technical issues such as standards for pulling cable and non-technical issues such as communication. This will include reviewing already published policies.
  • Defining service-level agreements for CNS data and voice services.
  • Financial issues, focussing on how departments are charged for CNS services .
  • Discussion of mid-level campus network design issues.
  • Assist in long-term planning for the campus network.
The committee's recommendations on priorities are binding (both to campus departments and CNS) if endorsed by the ITAC and the e-Berkeley Steering Committee but may be overruled by the Chancellor's Cabinet or the Chancellor. The committee's recommendations on handling the Node Bank issues are similarly binding. Other recommendations may require explicit Cabinet approval to become binding on campus departments and CNS.

Voting Membership: Membership includes representatives from staff (appointed by the ITAC, under the general direction of the e-Berkeley Steering Committee) and faculty (up to six, chosen by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, based on recommendations from the Academic Senate's Committee on Committees). The committee will endeavor to include representation from groups providing technical support to academic units.
